Treatment of the Septic Arthritis in Shoulder Joint after Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair

Abstract

|
|
As arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR) increases, septic arthritis in the shoulder joint increases proportionally. In particular, elderly patients may be at increased risk of potential infection if they have medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and tuberculosis, or have a history of multiple injections before the surgery. In addition, if diagnosis and treatment are delayed, it may cause complications such as irreversible bone and cartilage injury, joint contracture, and soft tissue injury, so early diagnosis and treatment are required. In the case of septic arthritis after ARCR, conservative treatment, arthroscopic or open debridement, and resection arthroplasty with bone cement may be performed depending on the degree of infection, the extent of invasion, and the integrity of the rotator cuff. After the septic arthritis is controlled, conservative treatment, revision ARCR, tendon transfer, and reverse total shoulder arthroplasty can be considered.
